2023-2024 Freshman English Summer Reading
English I and Advanced English I:
You are required to choose one of the following books to read over the summer:
1. Legend by Marie Lu: In a future world, two young people from different backgrounds, June and Day, find themselves caught up in a dangerous game that could change everything. They must navigate a society divided by power and fight for what they believe in. This thrilling book explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the power of standing up for what is right.
2. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson: The story follows a high school freshman named Melinda who has experienced a traumatic event and struggles to find her voice. She faces isolation and bullying but eventually learns to express herself and heal. This book touches on themes of identity, the effects of trauma, and the strength it takes to speak up and be heard.
3. Anne Frank: The Diary of A Young Girl: This book is the real-life diary of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl who hid with her family during World War II to escape the Nazis. Through her diary, she shares her thoughts, dreams, and fears. It's a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of hope, even in the darkest times.
4. The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley: Set during World War II, this story follows Ada, a young girl with a disability, who escapes from her abusive home in London to the countryside. There, she discovers freedom, love, and her own strength. The book explores themes of resilience, family, and overcoming challenges.
A quiz and a writing assignment will be given to evaluate your understanding and analysis
of your chosen book when classes resume in the fall.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
Assignment:
